How You Can Avoid Temptation To Sin

The temptation to sin is something that every person here on earth deals with, most every day. Have you figured out how you can avoid the temptation to sin?

1 Corinthians 10:13 says to us that there is no temptation that is uncommon for humans.

When you put your faith in Christ, He will help you to remain safe from temptation and stand against things that do happen to tempt you.

Christ, Is Always Your Escape from Temptation.

As you walk through your faith, you’re going to face situations where temptation arises.

It leads you to question how to avoid temptation with so much of it around you.

Last week we discussed the different types of sin.

Today we will provide you with some ways to help you, so that you can avoid the temptation to sin.

Read on.

Acknowledge Your Formidable Opponent

Sin is an equal opportunity offender.

Men, women, children, animals, insects, all of creation is impacted by sin.

As a result, satan uses all the tools and loyal subjects at his disposal to entice you to sin which in turn separates you from Holy God.

And THAT is satan’s end game.

If you were a boxer, you would not enter the ring without having first trained for your big fight.

Thus, it is equally important for you to recognize that satan is real, hell is real and sin is your worst enemy.

There is much more to avoiding the temptation to sin, though recognizing the evil power of temptation and sin is step number one.

Protect Your Environment and Pray

Step two to avoid temptation in your life is to identify things that easily tempt you to sin.

Excessive television watching, hours upon hours spent on your smartphone surfing social media sites and keeping up with news updates will not improve your mood or your life.

Avoid the following:

  • Sexually suggestive television programs, videos, music or movies
  • Any news, information, videos, television programs laced with violence and profanity
  • Politically charged radio, television or cable news shows
  • Gossip news stories and entertainment news radio, television shows or videos

None of the above will help you develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.

They are all divisive and they will create a chasm, a great divide, between you and The Lord.

Additionally, sometimes the things that tempt you aren’t necessarily items, but people present in your life.

You must always ask God why He has put specific people in your life and ask for His guidance in the way you should interact with them.

I am not advocating cutting people out of your life, though if a person is having a very negative impact on your life and this is preventing you from living the life God has planned for you, then you need to pray about it.

Trust God and wait for Him to answer your prayer, you will know what to do.

Removing these temptations from your life and praying that God helps you resist them, can and will help you avoid sin.

It is critical for you to monitor and improve the environment around you each and every day.

Create a quiet space in your home, free of all distractions.

A safe space and place where you can go to fellowship with God.

Give yourself the gift of Electronic Free Hours, where you stay clear of your television, your smartphone, your computer or any other electronic devices.

The flesh is weak, but you will remain strong when you’re filled with the Holy Spirit.

Create a list of things you can do when you feel temptation coming on.

Whenever temptation comes knocking at my door, the first thing I reach for is my Bible.

Read Your Bible To Avoid Temptation To Sin

Your greatest weapon in your war against sin is The Holy Bible!

The Bible was written by God, so that you and every soul on the face of this earth would have access to God’s guidance on how to live your life here on earth.

Moreover, how to experience true fellowship with Him through His One and Only Son, Jesus Christ.

Your Life Guidebook, The Bible says to watch out for temptation to refrain from being tempted.

Whenever you feel yourself being tempted to sin, one of the best things you can do is take shelter in the Word of God.

There are several Bible passages that you can read to remind you about what God says about how to avoid sin.

Prioritize your time to memorize Bible passages that you can recite to yourself when you’re faced with a situation where you might fall into temptation.

They are truth, they are your armor, they are your protection from the devil himself!

Post these Bible verses, think of them as your daily Christ notes and place them all around your room.

Don’t Allow Temptation To Own You

There are going to be times when your ‘flesh is weak,’ and after these times of weakness, you’ll feel disappointed in yourself.

Disappointment is sin.

Again, sin separates you from Holy God.

Bad analogy time.

Sins are like potato chips.

There are times when you just cannot stop at one.

As a result, all of a sudden, your actions become destructive and your entire belief system has changed, and not for the better!

You do not want that to happen!

Jesus Christ died, and defeated sin, once and for all.

He did this so that you and I could live forever!

Know that His Grace and Salvation are not a license for any of us to knowingly and repeatedly sin.

Understand that there will be times in your life where you fail and sin, but use these moments of failure to reinforce your faith and help you to become stronger.

The devil doesn’t own you, unless you invite him to.

1 John 1:9 says that when you confess your sins, God will forgive you for the things you’ve done.

Change Your Mindset to Avoid Temptation To Sin

Being intentional is your next step to avoid the temptation to sin.

There is a spiritual war happening now and the battlefield is your mind!

You are already at a disadvantage because we live in a fallen world, run by satan, for now.

Withstand the world’s ways and don’t allow influences to change you or the things that you believe in.

Go about your day with purpose.

An idle mind is the Devil’s playground.

Thus, you must intentionally do what you can to guard your mind and the things that you think about.

Meaning, you have to TRULY NOT WANT TO SIN.

When you are born again, you have the Power of Christ living inside you, with you at all times.

All you need to do is to flee from temptation and sin.

Jesus Christ will do the rest.

I know this from personal experience.

To recap:

  • Acknowledge The Enemy
  • Safeguard Your Environment
  • Pray
  • Read Your Bible
  • Don’t Allow Temptation To Own You
  • Be Intentional About Your Mindset

Practice Fasting

The phrase fasting has several meanings.

Fasting does not apply only to food and drink, though they can be a part of your fast.

There is a section of the Bible that details a time when Jesus found himself being tempted.

As a result of facing temptation himself, Jesus was led to spend time in the wilderness fasting.

When you clear your decks, so to speak and focus on all that matters, your relationship with Jesus Christ and what He wants you to do in this life; only then, will you experience the benefits of proper fasting.

You will gain perspective.

Moreover, you will experience complete clarity.

The Bible instructs us on how to fast.

You have the King of Kings in your corner, The Holy One who has overcome all temptation, all evil and the world!

Accountability Partners to Help You

When there are two or more gathered in His Name, we lift up and support one another.

A prayer or accountability partner will help to remind you of the commitment you have made to God and to yourself.

Providing the encouragement you need to get through difficult trials.

Moreover, it is a two-way street.

There will be times when you will be there to lift up for your accountability partner.

Because, we all suffer through trials and temptation.
